The Nomination Committee identifies candidates to run for elected offices in the MAS Executive Committee, including Directors, Secretary, and President Elect.
Rhonda joined MAS in 2005. She has served MAS in multiple roles, as a Tour Speaker (2006, 2017-), as a Director (2012-2014), as chair of the Strategic Planning committee (2014-2017), and as President Elect (2017-2018). She holds degrees in physics from Cornell (A.B. '91) and Washington University in St. Louis (Ph.D. '96). Her research expertise is in the coordinated analysis of synthetic and natural nanoscale materials, using electron, ion, and X-ray beam methods. As head of Nanoscale Materials Section at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, she maintains the DoD's most advanced electron microscopy facility for basic research, including a Nion UltraSTEM 200-X and a JEOL 2200FS. On going projects in her group include investigation of the cosmics recycling of dust from ancient stars into new solar systems, and the development of functionalized nanomaterials for sensor and renewable energy applications. She is a fellow of the American Physical Society and of the Meteoritical Society. Asteroid 8468Rhondastroud was named by the IAU in her honor for her contributions to the understanding of planetary materials.

The Computer Activities Committee is responsible for administering the MAS's Internet presence. The committee works with the Finance Committee, the Membership Committee, the Awards Committee, the Topical Conference Organizing Committees, the Council and other MAS groups to ensure that the Internet services they require are available.
Nicholas is a scientist with the National Institute of Standards and Technology where he studies ways to make microanalytical measurements more robust and reliable. He has been involved with the MAS as a Council member, the Awards Committee Chair and is the current Computer Activities Chair.

Heather joined MAS in 2001 as a student and continues as a regular member.  She has served in the Society as Director and MicroNews editor and is currently Secretary and International Liaison.  She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Geology at Mount Union College, Alliance, OH (2000) and a Master's Degree in Geochemistry from the Colorado School of Mines (2005).  She specializes in microanalysis of rocks, minerals, and other materials from a wide variety of applications.  As  Director of the Denver Microbeam Laboratory, an analytical facility operated by the USGS Mineral Resources Program, she is responsible for a) developing and improving methods of electron beam microanalysis techniques as needed to address a broad range of earth science issues, b) work with colleagues to interpret the microanalysis data in the context of geologic processes, c) instruct scientists in the theory and operation of electron microbeam instruments and assist in data reduction, and d) development and maintenance of software for data reduction and operation of the electron microprobe and scanning electron microscope.  While most of her research supports the Energy and Minerals USGS Mission areas, her knowledge of microanalysis and electron beam based instruments and software has allowed her to tweak existing methods, or create new methods to help collaborators in the Water, Climate and Land Use, Natural Hazards, and Ecosystems mission areas, and other Federal and State agencies such as US EPA, EPA National Enforcement Investigations Center (NEIC), Center for Disease Control (CDC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), US Public Health Service, FEMA, US Department of Justice, NASA, US Air Force, US Army, US Department of State, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, State of California, and the State of Colorado.

Assel Aitkaliyeva is an Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Florida (UF). She maintains a joint appointment with Idaho National Laboratory (INL), where she spent 5 years as a staff scientist before joining UF. She received her PhD. in Materials Science & Engineering and M.S. in Nuclear Engineering at the Texas A&M University. Her current research interests include: nuclear fuels and materials, with emphasis on characterization and property evaluation; mechanical and thermal properties of materials; reactor irradiation; radiation damage in materials; ion implantation; kinetics; composites; nanostructured materials; and multi-scale simulation of nuclear fuel.

Donovan N. Leonard has been a member of MAS since 1998. He has served on the MSA Executive Program Committee (2015, MAS Co-Chair) and is now serving on the Microscopy and Microanalysis Editorial Board (20017-2019). He has been an active member of his local affiliated society, the Appalachian Region Microscopy Society (AReMS), since 1998 and served as President (2012-2014) and webmaster (2008-2014).

Donovan is currently a Senior Technical Staff Member in the Materials Science & Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2002 and joined ORNL in 2007. Before ORNL he was tenure track faculty in the Physics & Astronomy Dept. of Appalachian State University and had worked for IBM in microelectronics packaging applications. His research now involves daily application of advanced microscopy and microanalysis methods to energy related materials at length scales from the atomic level to the macro scale. More specifically, aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) of quantum materials in addition to EPMA/WDS, EBSD and EDS analysis of materials critical for vehicle lightweighting, fossil, fusion and solar applications.

The Affiliated Regional Societies (AReS) and Tour Speaker Committee was established as an information resource for the AReS and to provide, at no charge, a renowned speaker for one technical meeting per year for an AReS.

Kerry is a Physical Scientist in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST) NanoFab User Facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). She manages the NanoFab’s SEM, XRD, AFM and sample preparation laboratories. Prior to joining NIST Kerry worked at the Major Analytical Instrumentation Center at the University of Florida where she worked with faculty and students in the areas of microstructural analysis of materials. Her research focused on Nano Toxicology, specifically the uptake of nanoparticles by cells and tissues.

I have redefined my mission in line with my interest in preserving the history, partiucularly in terms of conducting oral history interviews of early pioneers in EPMA and in the development of our society. I work closely with Mike Marko, who is the arhivist of the Microscopy Society of America. We conduct oral history interviews of both pioneers as well as individuals who have made significant advances in our fields. These are archived and made available via MSA, though MAS ones will in the future be available via a link on the MAS website. I have interviewed over a dozen individuals, including several in France who worked Castaing, as well as Peter Duncumb in the UK. With assistance from the family of David Wittry, inventor of the ARL microprobe and a founder of Electron Probe Analysis Society of America (EPASA), the first name of our organization, I accessed his files which were in themselves an archive of EPMA in the 1950s. And I have been bequeathed by the previous archivists with some documents from the early years of the society, many of which have been scanned and will also be availalbe online.
After dropping out of college at the height of 'turbulent 60s' and then spending many years as an arc-welder and union gadfly in a shipyard, John returned to school and become a geologist. By 1983, he had gotten his B.S. in Geology at the University of Maryland, and soon after was at Johns Hopkins, spending 2 field seasons in the Aleutians studying Shishaldin Volcano. Around 1985, he became acquainted with the MAC probe at the Geophysical Lab in DC, spending many nights straining his eyes trying to see the microscope’s image of the sample surface and punching commands on the teletype ("surely you jest”) and being warned by David George “do not touch the PHA dials". He did a post-doc at the Smithsonian in 1989 studying anhydrite inclusions in the Nevado del Ruiz pumice, using the Smithsonian's 9 spectrometer ARL-SEMQ under the eyes of Gene Jarosewich and Joe Nelen. He next analyzed anhydrite in Pinatubo pumice with the new Hopkins JEOL 8600, before being hired to run the probe lab at Wisconsin. There he babysat the ARL-SEMQ while waiting for a new CAMECA SX51 to come. He is now the proud father of a CAMECA SXFive FE. His oddest objects of study have been metal found in Oscr Meyer hot dogs and white crystals on cheese. He has 59 publications and 143 abstracts. He is also a historian, the archivist of MAS, and has been an amateur radio operator (WA3BTA) since 1964. CQ DX?

The Finance Committee has overall responsibility for the operation and administration of the MAS investment fund portfolio, currently housed in and managed by Morgan Stanley using Committee guidance consistent with the MAS Investment Policy Statement.
Jim McGee has been a member of MAS since 1979 and has served the Society as a session chair, Council member, Treasurer, and Finance Committee member. Jim’s professional career encompassed research and microanalytical development applied to geologic and nuclear reactor materials, working at the US Geological Survey, University of South Carolina, and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory.

The Awards Committee is responsible for recommending candidates for the MAS societies various paper, service and science awards.
Andrew Herzing received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Lehigh University under the supervision of Professor Christopher Kiely. During this period he was awarded the George P. Conard award for outstanding graduate student. He then spent two years as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD, where he is now a staff scientist in the Material Measurement Laboratory. Andrew’s research is centered on the quantitative structural and chemical characterization of small volumes of material using electron microscopy techniques. In particular, he is currently focused on the characterization of organic composites, developing quantitative methods for three-dimensional characterization of materials using tomographic techniques, and the measurement of surface plasmon resonance behavior in individual nanostructures. He has contributed to over 70 peer-reviewed publications and three book chapters in a wide variety of fields involving electron microscopy. In 2017, Andrew was presented with the K. F. J. Heinrich award from the Microanalysis Society.

This "committee" updates the membership database, informs Drohan of members who renew subscriptions to M&M journal, coordinates elections, and verifies which people are members of MAS in good standing (i.e., have paid membership dues for the year).
Mike Nagorka spent thirteen years at an analytical lab in California performing electron microscopy of various sorts (TEM, SEM/EDS, EPMA). Prior to that he worked for nine years as a metallurgist at Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. He holds BS and MS degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and a Ph.D. in Materials from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The purpose of the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) is to coordinate with MAS council to identify key objectives that best fulfills the mission of the society, and to create long term plans and action items that will achieve these objectives. Currently, there are two key objectives the SPC is focused on. These are: 1) to develop a sustainable solution for retaining and effectively utilizing institutional knowledge and 2) enhance membership retention and participation in society functions.
Keana Scott is a Physical Scientist in the Materials Measurement Science Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). After developing automation engineering solutions for Celera Genomics during their collaboration with NIH on the Human Genome Project, Keana led a group of scientists involved in computational chemistry and proteomics. Keana was also one of the core developers for the small molecule discovery software SEURAT, which was later acquired by Schrödinger. Keana joined NIST in 2006 to work on multi-modal bioimaging technique development and the microanalysis of materials using electron and ion beams. Her current projects include microscopy and microanalysis method development for nanocomposites and computational microscopy for organic and biological material characterization. She has also been organizing the annual FIB SEM User Group meeting since 2006 and a lecturer for the SEM and the FIB courses at the Lehigh Microscopy School since 2009.

The Sustaining Members Committee promotes MAS by facilitating membership from industrial/corporate/university partners. The committee also acts as liaisons between the sustaining members and MAS council, advocating on the SM behalf.
Lucille A. Giannuzzi holds a B.E. in Engineering Science and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stony Brook University. She received her Ph.D. from Penn State in Metals Science and Engineering and was a Post-Doc at the PSU Center for Advanced Materials. Prof. Giannuzzi was at the University of Central Florida for 10 years where she was a recipient of an NSF CAREER award. She joined FEI Company as a product marketing engineer for 7 years before founding her own consulting and product companies. Dr. Giannuzzi has applied focused ion beam and electron microscopy techniques to study the structure/property relationships in metals, alloys, ceramics, composites, polymers, minerals, bone/dental implants, irradiated, inorganic, and biological materials. She maintains professional affiliations in AVS, ACerS, ASM Intl., TMS, MRS, MSA, and MAS, and is a Fellow of AVS and MSA. Dr. Giannuzzi has over 125 (co)authored publications; several FIB-related patents, contributed to several invited book chapters, and is co-editor of a book entitled “Introduction to Focused Ion Beams.”

The MAS Fellows Committee was established to recognize eminent scientists, engineers, and technologists in the field of microanalysis of materials and related phenomena to serve as ambassadors for the Soceity. Members of MAS who have distinguished themselves through outstanding research and service to the microanalysis community are eligible for this recognition. Relevent carreer pursuits include, but is not limited to, technique development, applications, theory development, and distinguished service to the society. The MAS Fellows Committee has created a process for soliciting and judging nominations on an annual basis. Election as an MAS Fellow will be highly selective but should represent a broad cross-section of the MAS membership.

Thomas F. Kelly was a professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 18 years prior to founding Imago Scientific Instruments in 1999 to commercialize the Local Electrode Atom Probe, or LEAP. Tom was also Director of the Materials Science Center at the UW from 1992 to 1999. He has been active in the fields of analytical electron microscopy, atom probe microscopy, rapidly solidified materials, and electronic and superconducting materials since 1977. He has published over 250 papers and 17 patents in these fields in that time. Tom has driven innovation in instrumentation for atom probe tomography over the past two decades. He continues to pursue microscopy innovations such as atomic-scale tomography by developing new detector technologies and combining atom probe tomography with electron microscopy in a single instrument. Tom was a member of the Executive Council of the Microscopy Society of America (MSA) from 2000 to 2002 and the International Steering Committee of the International Field Emission Society (IFES) from 2002 to 2008. From 2010 to 2014, Tom served on the Council of the Microanalysis Society (MAS) and in 2012 was elected President to serve from August 2014 to August 2016. He was President of IFES from 2006 to 2008. He was an editor of Microscopy and Microanalysis from 2010 to 2015. He has served as the inaugural chair of the Microscopy Today Innovation Awards Committee for MSA since 2010. He currently chairs the Fellows Committee of MAS. Tom is a fellow of the MSA, IFES and the Korea Society for Microscopy.
